While helping a friend search for her birth mother, British-Romanian filmmaker Rachel is drawn back into her own family history. What begins as an outward act of support turns inward, confronting her own past of abuse and exploitation. As an international search for her missing sister unfolds, the film takes an unexpected formal and emotional turn, transforming a personal investigation into an act of self-authorship and asking whether cinema can offer a way to break inherited narratives and rewrite the story of her own life.
Rachel Taparjan is a British-Romanian filmmaker and social work academic. She has directed documentary short films and is a member of the Documentary Association of Europe. Something Familiar is her debut feature-length documentary.
