Cinematographer: Ross McElwee
For nearly 40 years, Ross McElwee has made closely observed and profoundly subjective documentaries about how his personal life intersects with the world at large. His son Adrian grew up inside these films, and eventually began experimenting with the camera himself. As Ross attempts to adapt his uniquely personal 1986 documentary, Sherman’s March into a narrative film, Adrian tragically and unexpectedly dies, which causes Ross to reassess his life’s work and his deep connection to filmmaking. This critically acclaimed film won the Golden Globe Impact Prize at the Venice International Film Festival.
Ross McElwee has made 10 feature-length award-winning films. In 2005, complete retrospectives of his films were presented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and later in close to a dozen cities around the world. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundations, as well as the American Film Institute and the National Endowment for the Arts. He was Professor of the Practice of Filmmaking at Harvard University from 2005 until his retirement in 2024.
