Ten years ago, Director Ava DuVernay released her groundbreaking documentary 13th, which argued that the loopholes in the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, abolishing slavery, led to today’s mass incarceration of Black Americans. Now she has released a companion sequel, showing how the rights of the 14th Amendment (birthright citizenship, equal protection under the law, and due process) are under systemic attack. DuVernay noted: “If 13th asked who gets caged, then 14th asks who gets counted.”
Ava DuVernay’s film 13th was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature and won a Primetime Emmy and also a BAFTA for Best Documentary. DuVernay was the first African-American woman to win the Directing Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival (for Middle of Nowhere). She was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Director for Selma. When They See Us received a Primetime Emmy Award.
